Exploring the web

See what Internet Explorer 8 can do for your browsing

See what you can do with Web Slices in Internet Explorer 8. (1:04)

You've probably got websites you visit often for updates—auctions, stock quotes, e-mail, sports scores, and so on. But it can be hard to stay current, especially if you’re tracking many sites.

With Internet Explorer 8, you can easily keep up with your go-to sites.

A slice of the web

Web Slices help you track changeable webpages right on your Favorites bar. When you click the green icon on a page that has Web Slices available, Internet Explorer subscribes to the page. Then, when something on the page changes—like someone outbidding you on that antique—the Web Slice on your Favorites bar turns bold to get your attention.

Find it, map it, mail it

Internet Explorer 8 also builds in a speedier way to map, e-mail, blog, search, and translate information on webpages. Just highlight text and a blue Accelerator icon appears. Click it for a list of things you can do. If you point to “Map with Bing” instead of clicking it, a map pops up—you don’t even have to leave the page. Neat!

Need a hint?

An improved search box now lets you switch search providers in an instant and provides previews of the results—with pictures, even. Want more? You’ll also get search hints after typing the first few letters—really handy if you’re not sure exactly what you're looking for.

Surf more, worry less

Sometimes, the web can seem a little alarming—with fake notifications from social networking sites, phishing e-mails out to get your personal information, and other dangers. The new SmartScreen filter is designed to help protect you from existing and emerging online threats. If the filter detects a malicious website, Internet Explorer 8 will block it.
